Drive-In Cinemas in Switzerland
Switzerland has no permanent drive-in cinema. The country’s strong indoor cinema infrastructure, high operating costs, and limited flat terrain in many areas work against the format. One annual event — Autokino Muri — continues.
Current State
Autokino Muri in Canton Aargau is Switzerland’s only recurring drive-in cinema event. It runs for three days in late July each year. The setup includes an outdoor screen with FM radio audio, a festival tent with bar and food service. The event is community-organized.
Two other venues appeared in listings during the COVID period — Cinema Drive-In Pratteln (Basel-Landschaft) and Drive-In Movies Hinwil (Canton of Zurich). Both are currently inactive. Pratteln projected films onto a house wall with dual-language audio on separate FM frequencies, reflecting Switzerland’s multilingual context.
History
Switzerland never developed a drive-in cinema tradition. The format depends on large flat parking areas, warm summer evenings, and car-centric infrastructure. Switzerland’s mountainous geography, cooler temperatures at elevation, and strong public transport networks made the format impractical at scale.
COVID-19 in 2020 briefly changed this. Pop-up drive-in screenings appeared in several cantons, using parking lots and event grounds. Most were one-time or short-run events. Autokino Muri predates the pandemic and has continued.
Visiting Tips
Autokino Muri runs in late July. Check autokinomuri.ch for dates and ticket information. Audio is via FM radio. Swiss evenings can be cool even in summer — bring warm layers. Screenings start at nightfall.
