Drive-In Cinemas in the Netherlands
The Netherlands has no permanent drive-in cinema. One pop-up operator runs events several times per year. During the 2020 COVID lockdowns, temporary drive-ins appeared in parking lots and event grounds across the country, but none became permanent.
Current State
Drive In Bioscoop Den Bosch is the only recurring drive-in cinema event in the Netherlands. Based in Rosmalen near ‘s-Hertogenbosch, it sets up several times per year for spring screenings and Halloween events. It does not operate on a fixed weekly schedule.
The Netherlands never developed a permanent drive-in tradition. The country’s dense urban layout, strong cycling culture, and extensive public transport reduce dependence on cars for entertainment. Most Dutch cinema-going happens in indoor multiplexes or at outdoor walk-in screening events during summer.
COVID-19 Pop-Ups
The 2020 pandemic produced a brief wave of pop-up drive-ins. Dutch COVID restrictions favored outdoor activities where people could remain in their vehicles. Temporary screenings appeared in parking lots, festival grounds, and sports venues across the country.
Most closed once indoor cinemas reopened. Drive In Bioscoop Den Bosch is one of the few to continue in any form.
Visiting Tips
Drive In Bioscoop Den Bosch operates on an event basis — check the venue’s website or social media for upcoming dates. Audio is broadcast via FM radio. Bring a portable FM radio as backup. Screenings start at dusk, which means late starts in the long Dutch summer evenings (9:00 to 10:00 PM in June and July). Dutch evenings can be cool even in summer. Bring a blanket.
